Today we will enjoy our adventurous drive in a 4 WD through deciduous forests to the highest permanently inhabited village of Europe-Ushguli. En-route we stop at the village of Ipari to visit its 12th century church of St. George which features pagan animal carvings as well as different beautiful frescos.
The village of Ushguli, sheltered under the feet of the highest mountain of Georgia -Shkara (5200m) looks like a picture from the Middle Ages where dozens of dark brown towers give a mystical silhouette to a small settlement. After lunch we visit Lamaria (St. Mary) church on the top of the mountain and take a short walk in the alpine meadows towards the glacier.
We arrive back to Mestia in the early evening and enjoy dinner at our hotel.
