This pilgrim style day trip in East Georgian region of Kakheti takes you to the ancient Christian roots of Georgia exploring some ecclesiastic masterpieces of national importance .

This morning we first drive to the town of Telavi-administration centre of Kakheti region and visit glorious ruins of Ikalto academy complex. Established as a monastery by Assyrian missionary Zenon in the 6th century, it grew as an important educational-scholastic center in the 12th century where, according to a legend famous Georgian poet and author of epic “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin” Shota Rustaveli (12th c.) studied.

Later we continue our trip to Alaverdi Cathedral (11th c.). This monumental, solemn-looking edifice dominates the surrounding landscape in the fertile river valley against the backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains. Famous for its façades with monumental blind arcades and opulent decorations , Alaverdi Cathedral has many times been plundered during its history.

After lunch we drive to visit the earliest church which preserved up to now-Nekresi complex. Built on the ruins of the pagan god of the moon,the complex includes several churches of the Early Middle Ages as well as the Bishop’s palace and even the foundation of the pagan temple.

On our way back to Tbilisi we stop at All saints Church of Gurjaani (6th c.)-one of the only two two-domed churches in the world.
