Explore the highest mountain chain of Europe-The Great Caucasus in one day !
This unforgettable day trip starts from Tbilisi and continues along Georgia’s famous Military Highway which was first times mentioned as a major route linking Roman Empire to the Caucasus by Strabo as early as the 1st c A.D.
En-route we visit Ananuri Architectural Complex overlooking a water-reservoir. This 17th -18th c complex includes several churches, bell-fries and well-preserved defensive wall with its built-in towers. Later we head up to the real heart of the Caucasus when deciduous forests and rustic landscapes remain far behind and we continue drive through alpine meadows capped by the snowy glaciers.
We arrive in the town of Stepantsminda-the last town of Georgia at Georgian-Russian border. Here we enjoy our leisure walk up to 14th century Gergeti Trinity church (3-4 hrs round trip) from were opens spectacular views of different snow-capped glaciers and canyons. Weather permitting , we may also be able to catch a glimpse of one of the highest glaciers in the Caucasus-Mt. Kazbegi (5047m.) We take small village backstreets to walk down to the town and drive back to Tbilisi.
